What Is A Functional Ovarian Cyst – Symptoms And Treatment
Ovarian cysts are best described as lumps that form on the ovaries. They can be filled with fluid or in the case of dermoid cysts, hard tissue. In many cases they will simply go away just as quickly as they arrived but in other cases they may continue to develop and this can lead to problems. This article will cover the functional ovarian cyst. It will describe why it occurs, typical symptoms and some ways to treat the problem.
Functional ovarian cysts refer to cysts developing after the normal functioning of the ovaries when an egg is released each month. In this respect functional ovarian cysts are common and are as likely to shrink or go away as cause any symptoms like pain of such like.
There are two ways in which a functional ovarian cyst can occur :
1.When the ovary fails to release an egg, the ovarian sac that has developed fills with fluid – this is known as a follicular cyst.
2.When the ovarian sac releases an egg, reseals but continues to fill with fluid – this is known as a luteal cyst.
As already stated, functional cysts are quite common and are normally fairly small. It is unusual for there to be any untoward symptoms but, typically, if there are any, you may experience pain and bleeding in the second and third days of menstruation. Other symptoms may include nausea and even vomiting.
Many doctors will treat functional ovarian cysts by trying to fix the symptoms rather than going to the root of the problem. So they may advise taking birth control pills to alter the hormonal level in the body. This may have some success but does not really stop the problem form reoccurring.
A better approach is to use a holistic plan that encompasses lifestyle and dietary considerations. By following a plan, there are less chances of such cysts developing and the body’s immune system is more likely to resolve any issues before they become problematic and manifest painful or uncomfortable symptoms.
